HexaLock CD ROM Copy Protection, Version 2.0 Test Report
Date: May 16, 2002
CD Type: Original CD-ROM software protected by
HexaLock CD ROM copy protection version 2.0 and its related copies.
Introduction
The test was
conducted at the HexaLock Test Laboratories in Shefayim, Israel to test the
strength of Version 2.0 CD-ROM copy protection from HexaLock, Ltd.
The Test objective
is to estimate the strength of the copy protection system in terms of
anti-copying and anti-cracking properties. It is important to mention that in
the recent months the “naïve” users that used to use “anti-copying” software in
order to run unauthorized software, use more and more “anti cracking” tools
that are freely available in the internet.
An additional
essential property of any copy protection system is the compatibility of the
original media to the installed base of CD ROM drives. This study’s focus was
not to specifically measure the compatibility levels in a fully comprehensive
manner, however this study brings also the compatibility results made on the
study’s
CD ROM drives and indicates outstanding compatibility levels.
In terms of anti-copying
the test results show a perfect immunity against the common copying software,
and also perfect immunity against available common “cloning” software types.
In terms of anti-cracking
the results show that there is no evidence of the existence of anti-cracking
tools that can overcome HexaLock, however the product is not common yet, so it
is difficult to project these results forward.
Description
A.
Anti Copying Test
The Test includes
running of 13 different media made of each copy protection product over 32
different CD ROM readers:
- Original media
- Copy made by a clone CD software (*)
and Teac reader and Teac writer.
- Copy made by the clone CD software (*)
and Plextor reader and Plextor writer.
- Copy made by the clone CD software (*)
and Matshita reader and Matshita writer.
- Copy made by the clone CD software (*)
and Toshiba reader and Teac writer.
- Copy made by the clone CD software (*)
and E-Ide reader and Teac writer.
- Copy made by the clone CD software (*)
and LG-DVD ROM reader and Teac writer.
- Copy made by the clone CD software (*)
and Matshita reader and Teac writer.
- Copy made by the clone CD software (*)
and Pioneer DVD-ROM reader and Teac writer.

(*) and Teac reader and Teac writer.
- Copy made by the Blind Write software
(*) and Plextor reader and Plextor writer.
- Copy made by the Easy CD Creator
software and Teac reader and Teac writer.
- Copy made by the Nero Burning Rom
software and Teac.
(*) – Clone CD
software and Blind Write software are “cloning” software
The Original Media
that was tested was:
- HexaLock CD-ROM Copy Protection,
version 2.0 Demo CD, Build 76.
It is important to
mention that the selection of the equipment is also important for tackling the
copy protection software. The CD writers we chose, Teac, Plextor and Matshita,
are the most powerful drives in the market in terms of overcoming the copy
protection systems.
B. Anti Cracking Test
In the test we
tried to run a copy of the copy protection system using the following common
anti-cracking tools:
- Using generic cracks that are available
in the market (Internet).
- Running the software with emulation
software and without inserting the original CD to the CD Drive that is
requested by the copy protection software.
Tests
Parameters:
A.
Anti Copying Test
Reading Drive (RD): In the
copying process, 2 drives are used: Reading Drive and Writing Drive. The
Reading Drive is the drive from which the original media is being read. The
Reading Drive’s model number and manufacturer can be obtained by right clicking
on the ‘My Computer’ icon and selecting ‘properties’ to open the device
manager.
Writing Drive (WD): In the
copying process the Writing Drive is the drive in which the copy media is being
created. The Writing Drive’s model number and manufacturer can be obtained by
right clicking on the ‘My Computer’ icon and selecting ‘properties’ to open the
device manager.
Copying
Software (CS): The copying software that was used for
creating a Copy was either Clone CD, Write Blind, Easy CD Creator or Nero
Burning Rom. The latest versions
available were used.
Media Reading Drive (MRD): The drive that was used to run the copied media can be obtained by
right clicking on the ‘My Computer’ icon and selecting ‘properties’ to open the
device manager.

Results: A copy test marked “Ö”, implies that the software run was successful.
A compatibility
test marked “X” implies that the Test CD couldn’t be loaded in the CD ROM
drive; didn’t enable navigation through Windows Explorer; couldn’t run the
software or only ran a demo version of the software, per the SDK implementation
of the publisher.
Additional
information:
In case the tester finds other compatibility problems such as conflicts with
other programs; specific hardware configurations or any unexpected problems, he
is required to describe the problem in detail.
